The GFR test, or glomerular filtration rate test is primarily used to assess kidney function. This test may be ordered when there are signs of kidney damage or possible risks for developing it.[1], [2]
Discussion
- Glomerular filtration rate refers to the amount of blood that is filtered by the glomeruli, tiney filters in the kindeys that allow waste products to be removed from the blood, per minute.
- It is a measure of the function of the kidneys
- The eGFR test is performed by ordering a creatinine test and calculating the eGFR.
- It is ordered to monitor those with known kidney disease and those with conditions such as diabetes and hypertension that may lead to kidney damage.
Patient Preparation
- Factors which can cause increased levels:
- Pregnancy
- Drugs: Gentamicin, cisplatin, cefoxitin
- Factors which can cause decreased levels:
- Age, illnesses
Clinical Implications
High levels indicate:
- not a concern
Low levels indicate:
- Chronic kidney disease
