Autoimmune diseases result from an breakdown in the regulatory aspect of the immune system. In cases of autoimmune disease the body does not recognize self and attacks normal cell processes.

Sjogren syndrome is characterized by dry eyes and dry mouth resulting from immune-mediated lacrimal and salivary gland destruction.
