Autoimmune diseases result from an breakdown in the regulatory aspect of the immune system. In cases of autoimmune disease the body does not recognize self and attacks normal cell processes.

- Sjogren Syndrome
- Sjogren syndrome is characterized by dry eyes and dry mouth resulting from immune-mediated lacrimal and salivary gland destruction.
- Scleroderma
- Scleroderma involves excessive systemic fibrosis, most commonly in the skin (where it may be confined for years) but also eventually in the gastrointestinal tract, kidneys, heart, muscles and lungs.
