Acer campestre, or the Hedge maple is a small tree that does not exceed seven to eight metres high and can live up to 150 years. Acer in Latin translates to "hard", in reference to the hardness of its wood, as well as "sharp", in relation to the shape of its leaves. This tree is not particularly demanding of the quality of soil it grows in, but prefers calcareous soils. The Hedge maple grows in open forests with European Beech, Oak, and Hornbeam.[1]
