Cocculus is a remedy affecting mainly the central nervous system and in most cases there is at least some component of vertigo. It is often used in chronic and progressive neurological disorders.[1]

Indications

The following are the main indications for Cocculus.[2], [3]

Acute Conditions

  • Motion Sickness from the motion of boat, car, or other moving object. Can't tolerate thought/smell of food. Indigestion, vomiting, faintness. Wants to be left alone.
  • Dysmenorrhea with sharp, rubbing pain, like stones in the abdomen. Early, profuse, dark clotted menses. Hollow, empty sensation. Nausea. Extreme weakness, can hardly talk, walk. Faintness. Restless, trembling. Dazed, sluggish. Pain in absence of flow. Dysmenorrhea with hemorrhoids.

Chronic and Constitutional Conditions

  • Vertigo in the forehead, with nausea, palpitations, faintness. Heavy occiput (base of the head). As if intoxicated, dazed, numb. Weak, tremors. Empty, hollow feelings.
  • Headache located in the occiput (the base of the head) with very weak muscles, heavy head, as if in a daze. Vomiting, trembling, numbness. Head feels empty, separate from the body.

Other common conditions: mental fatigue, morning sickness

Characteristics

  • Triggers: traveling in moving vehicles, loss of sleep, long nursing of the sick, worrying about others
  • General: empty or hollow feeling, trembling and weakness
  • Worse: traveling in or watching a moving object, loss of sleep, after emotional disturbances
  • Better: sitting, lying on the side
  • Psychological: weakness after excessive worrying and caring for a loved one, nervous exhaustion, profound sadness, slow mental processes, time passes slowly
  • Other symptoms: tremendous nausea due to dizziness, cracking of knee joints
  • Food and drink: aversion to food
