Metabolic Syndrome, which is also referred to a Syndrome X or the Insulin Resistance Syndrome refers to a cluster of symptoms characterized by varying degress of glucose intolerance, abnormal high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol and/or triglyceride levels, high blood pressure and upper body obesity, which are all independent risk factors for coronary heart disease.[1]

The underlying pathophysiology of metabolic syndrome involves insulin resistance and the consequent hyperinsulinemia.[1]
