A scale is a secondary skin lesion that refers to excess dead epidermal cells that are produced by abnormal keratinization and shedding.[1]

Conditions associated with scales:

Fine to Stratified

  • Tinea versicolor
  • Xerosis
  • Psoriasis
  • seborrheic dermatitis

Scaling in sheets (desquamation)

  • Kawasaki disease
  • Scarlet fever
  • Staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome
  • toxic shock syndrome
