Macronutrients refer to those nutrients that humans require in the largest quantity. Macronutrients are either defined from the perspective of elements, food or chemical compounds and minerals.
- From an element perspective the macronutrients are carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen and oxygen.
- From a food perspective they are derived from carbohydrates, proteins and fats. Water and atmospheric oxygen are also required macronutrients.
- Calcium, sodium, chloride, magnesium, potassium, phosphorus and sulphur are minerals that are required in large quantities in order to maintain health.
