Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA) is an omega-3 fatty acid. DHA is a carboxylic acid with a 22-carbon chain and six cis double bonds; the first double bond is located at the third carbon from the omega end.[1] Foods high in DHA are manufactured internally from the essential alpha-linolenic acid.[2]
Uses
- DHA is the most abundant omega-3 fatty acid in the brain and retina.[3]
- Reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease by reducing the level of blood triglycerides.[4]
- Low-levels of DHA are associated with increased risk of Alzheimer's Disease[5]
- Found in sperm[6]
Food Sources
DHA is either obtained from the diet or synthesized from eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA).[7]
- Most of the DHA in fish comes from microalgae[8]
