Methylsufonylmethane or MSM is a sulfur-containing molecule and the oxidized form of the anti-inflammatory compound dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO).[1]
MSM is also known as DMSO2, methyl sulfone, and dimethyl sulfone.

MSM is a chemical found in plants, animals, and humans.
Uses
MSM is primary used to treat the following conditions:
- osteoarthritis[1]
- muscle pain
- interstitial cystitis
Prescribing Considerations
The recommended dosages have not yet been established. To determine what your specific requirements are talk to your naturopathic doctor or other trained medical professional.
- Adult: The general dosage is about 500 mg three to four times a day.
Safety
Methlysulphonylmethane (MSM) is generally considered safe.
- Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
- There are no sufficient studies to determine the safety of MSM when pregnant. It is best avoided during these times.
