Methylsufonylmethane or MSM is a sulfur-containing molecule and the oxidized form of the anti-inflammatory compound dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO).[1]

MSM is also known as DMSO2, methyl sulfone, and dimethyl sulfone.

  • Adult: The general dosage is about 500 mg three to four times a day.

Safety

Methlysulphonylmethane (MSM) is generally considered safe.

  • High doses of MSM may cause diarrhea or nausea. These effects are typically short-lived.
  • Allergies to MSM can exist and may show up as headaches, gastrointestinal irritation and skin rashes.
  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
  • There are no sufficient studies to determine the safety of MSM when pregnant. It is best avoided during these times.
