Holistic or holism means all, entire or total. It is based on the realization that the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. Holism considers the spiritual, psychological, functional and structural aspects of an individual, as well as the interaction of an individual with their environment, external and social factors. It also acknowledges that every aspect of a person works as an integrated whole, not as individual parts. For example, when a naturopathic practitioner is treating a patient with high blood pressure, they will often provide supportive treatments for the heart, as they address psychological and lifestyle factors, external factors, and other environmental factors that may be contributing to the problem.
