Indications

The following are the main indications for Ipecac.[2], [3]

  • Nausea which is constant and where tongue is clean. Nausea is not relieved by vomiting. Cutting pains, cramps. May vomit shiny mucous, food, bile, or bright blood. Much salivation. Sinking or hanging loose feeling in stomach. No thirst. After fruit, pork, rich food, sweets, smoking, in pregnancy, in addiction.
  • Headache with severe nausea and vomiting

Other common conditions: Asthma (acute; particularly in children)

Characteristics

  • Triggers: nausea with nearly any condition
  • General: constant nausea that is not relieved by vomiting and that is accompanied with a clean tongue, hates food and the smell of food
  • Worse: vomiting, overeating, warmth, lying down
  • Better: open air, closing eyes, cold drinks
  • Psychological: irritable, full of desires but doesn't know what he or she wants, difficult to please
  • Other symptoms: bleeding and nausea at the same time, copious saliva, loose rattling cough, unable to bring up mucous, cramps in the abdomen
  • Food and drink: lack of thirst

Prescribing Considerations

Homeopathic remedies are prescribed based on homeopathic principles and after a detailed case taking. The prescription recommendations below are provided only as a guide. Specific for amaebiasis; of remarkable value in the treatment of amaebic dysentry; also as a remedy for pyorrhea); In hematemesis compare Gelatin (which has a marked effect on the coagulability of the blood); Arsenicum album, Chamomilla, Pulsatilla, Tartarus emeticus, Squilla maritima, Convolvulus (colic and diarrhea); Typha latifolia - Cat-tail flag - (dysentery, diarrhea and summer complaint); Euphorbia hypericifolia - Garden Spurge - (very similar to Ipecac. Irritation of the respiratory and gastro-intestinal tracts and female organs); Lippia mexicana - (Persistent dry, hard, bronchial cough, asthma and chronic bronchitis); In Asthma compare Blatta orientalis
  • Antidotes: Arsenicum album, China, Tabacum
  • Complementary: Cuprum, Arnica
